Photo Story

Photo Story can be used with all kinds of pupils, but is particulary useful for those able pupils who are more artistic than scientists. It gives them the ability to be creative in science. Creativity is not always thought, by pupils, to be something they 'do in science'.

Because Photo Story is free to download is it reasonable to expect pupils to have access to the programme at home. If so this could be used as an extended homework.

  1. pupils might be presented with a number of images and invited to produce a whole story incorporating them.

  2. This is a really good tool to create quick and easy images and the results can be seen immediately. This is a low tech way of introducing multimedia in a user friendly way.

  3. almost unlimited use. Able to 'jazz up' less interesting areas. Encourages independent learning.Intaruing of triple science could easily be esed for covering a piece of content whilst also teaching this

  4. Suggestion

Give students a powerpoint with, say 5 slides. Including key facts on the topic; also, give them 5 pictures. They combine the two resources to create a story board.

Obvious variations; ask them to search for the pictures and / or information to support the key ideas. They will then create a cohesive presentation on story board.

  5. These ideas would also translate nicely into catering for PLTS at Key Stage 3 and beyond - creativity, working in groups and independent learning etc.

  6. Teachers or pupils might take it in turns to present a photostory of 'school experiment of the week' or 'science news of the week' or some such to be posted on the VLE

  7. Give the students the images and a research task, ask them to put the images and some text into a PowerPoint, import the PowerPoint into Photostory and ask them to record a narration to go with the images and text.

  8. As a creative person AND a scientist it is interesting that the general opinion of the person in the street is that scientists are ipso facto not creative. My own hero scientist is Leonardo da Vinci who was also quite creative!
I like the ease of use of Photo Story 3. There is a link to an alternative for Mac users using iMovie on the blog Tech4Teachers.

  9. Something I am going to need to practise. I think I will start with my Y8 who are struggling to get to grips with ISA terms they will learn it quickly and be able to help me...

  10. They are really useful tools for enhancing a students learning experience and level of engaement. For example they can be used to create a story board to show how a scientific explination was created.
